The precise date of the founding of Kerewan was not known, however, according to oral history, Mamadi Saffiatou Fatty founded Kerewan in the early 1800s. It was believed that he migrated from Baddibou Katchang a village founded by his brother. Kerewan is the administrative headquarter of the North Bank Region. Due to its strategic location on a small and deep tributary called Miniminiyang Bolongo, which has now been bridged over to make road communication easier between Baddibou, Niumi, and Banjul, the capital. Kerewan is divided into four major clans namely: Fatty Kunda, Ceesay Kunda, Sheriff Kunda and Jawara Kunda. The Fattys are the owners of the town. The Ceesays are the custodians of the imamship. The Jawaras claimed to be warriors (Kele Jawarolu) and protectors of the town. While Sheriffo lu (Hydara) claimed to be the descendants of Imam Al Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Each of these clans or Kabilolu is divided into two. For example, Bantasu and Maa Jawara Kunda form the Jawara Clan. There are other original clans including, Drammeh Kunda, Samusa Kunda, Jallow Kunda, Samateh Kunda, Jarjue Kunda, Kassama Kunda, Dampha Kunda, Fatajo Kunda, etc., and Korosumangoto, which is part of the new settlement as a result of the expansion of the town.
